Hi Derek,
Thank you so much for this beautiful app. It’s such a time saver when teaching. I would love the export to pdf function to not show the logo of beat-note to have the sheet music nice and clean. I though this would happen once I had premium. But unfortunately it’s not the case. Is this some setting I’m missing?
Derek Lee
Anthony Thank you so much for your kind words about Beat Note! I’m thrilled to hear that the app has been a valuable time-saver for your teaching. Beat Note has only been released for a short period of time and there’s still so much to come! I hope you’ll continue sharing your feedback about your experience with the app.
I appreciate your feedback regarding the export to PDF feature. When I first implemented this feature, I worked closely with a group of users to find a balance between branding and usability. We decided on a small and discrete logo to help spread the word about the app while keeping the focus on the sheet music.
Since this is the first inquiry about removing the logo since the feature was released, I’d love to learn more about your perspective and how you’d like to see the exported PDFs. Your insights could help improve the feature for everyone. Would you be open to having a 1:1 chat to discuss this further? Alternatively, if you have any suggestions that could maintain the ability to brand and help spread the word about the app within the context of the exported PDF, please feel free to share them.
Thanks again for your valuable feedback and support! Best, Derek

Derek Lee thank you for your swift reply! I didn’t know the app was this “young” even more impressive what you managed to do in the amount of time.
I’d definitely like a 1:1 to explain the reasoning more. And I guess the only other feedback at the moment I could share is having the opportunity to add the counts above the notes to the exported pdf. But I realize I might be asking for things that are already supported but I’m not seeing in the settings. Please let me know how to schedule this talk with you.
All the best!
Derek Lee
Anthony Thanks for your quick reply! I think the app is young (just hit two years!) and since I have a lot of plans for the future, I consider it to still be very early in the app's product lifecycle. 👍🏻
A feature request exists for adding the rhythm count here: https://roadmap.beat-note.app/feature-requests/p/display-rhythm-counting-with-music-notation
I've actually already started to build it and it's in beta testing. I don't have a target release date yet as I've been busy with some other work, so please vote for that feature (if you haven't already!) and I'll be updating that request once it's finished. The rhythm count will display both in the app and in the PDF export. If you have any other feedback or requests related to that please add it to that request. Thanks! 🙏
You can usually schedule a call with me right from within the app under the Settings Tab -> Meet 1:1 with Derek. However, I'm traveling long-distance on Monday and my schedule hasn't been ironed out yet - so the best thing right now would be to send me an email (Beat Note Settings -> Email Derek) and we can find a time that works for you (please let me know what time zone you're in). Looking forward!!
Derek Lee
Hello friends! Have you had a chance to try out the PDF export in the latest version of Beat Note? How has your experience been with this feature? I'd love your feedback on this feature now that it's been out for some time. This was the most requested feature and I'm really excited that I was able to create this for you.
If you can, please share feedback on:
#1. What do you love about it? How has having PDF export improved your experience with Beat Note? What has this enabled you to do? Please share something positive and kind. This helps to motivate me to continue building more features for you! 🙇🏻♂️
#2. Is there any aspect of it that could be improved or enhanced to make your experience exporting PDFs even better? For example: https://beat-note.canny.io/ask-a-question/p/more-lines-of-single-bars-on-one-page-shared-pdf
#3. Is there any aspect of it that you find frustrating or may not behave the way you expect?
Thanks for your feedback and continued support! 🙏🏻

Derek Lee: how do we update to 3.0? It’s not allowing me to update in the apple store app…
Derek Lee
Jesse Rolland: Thanks for the heads up! You should be able to go to the App Store and update to the latest version. Another user posted on here saying that they were able to access it, so I think it should be available.
Note: You may have to access your app updates and pull down to refresh to retrieve all of the latest app updates for it to show up.
Tap "App Store" > tap on your profile photo > Pull down to refresh
Let me know how it goes! I'm jumping on a plane shortly so I may or may not be able to respond in a timely manner.. 😅
Derek Lee
@Jesse Rolland Please let me know if you were able to download the latest version! 🙇🏻♂️
Derek Lee
Hello friends! I'm excited to see so many people interested in the Export PDF feature, and I'm also excited to share that development for this is nearly complete! 🎉
When I first started working on this in December, my initial approach was to create a PDF image of the music notation. This was the most straight-forward way to create it based on way the app was already rendering music notation to the screen. However, I learned from Zak Bond that it would be valuable to generate a vector graphic of the music notation not only for improved quality, but also for the ability to use the generated music notation in professional resources (e.g. books and print).
Therefore, I've been working hard to ensure I'm generating a proper vector-graphic PDF which looks absolutely beautiful and professional at any zoom level. While it has taken considerable more time to develop, even just looking at a printout its easy to see the difference in quality.
I'm excited to report that this work is nearly complete and PDF Export will be in the next major release (v3.0)! I'm targeting to release it before the end of the month. Please keep an eye out for it and thanks for your continued support! 🙇🏻♂️

Derek Lee
Hinrich Nagel: Ross Farley I should have included some screenshots and a sample! 😅
#1. Screenshot of the options you can choose when exporting a PDF:
- Paper Size: A4 or US Letter
- Page Orientation: Portrait or Landscape
- Number of measures per row: Depends on orientation
As you adjust these settings, the BN shows (along the bottom) how many pages will be generated.
I tried to include a sample, and discovered this site unfortunately doesn't allow PDFs to be uploaded. 😭
Here are some links to download samples (hopefully these show up as links!):
- Basic Shuffle: https://beat-note.app/pdfsamples/Basic_Shuffle.pdf
- 32nd & 16th Triplet Subdivision Testing: https://beat-note.app/pdfsamples/Warm_They_Reward_Fifteenth.pdf

Scheduled for major version 3.0 release.
Derek Lee
Hello friends! Based on your votes, I want to let you know I plan to include Export to PDF in the upcoming major 3.0 release! If you haven't responded to my questions below about your PDF use case, then I cannot take your feedback into consideration with this initial release. As with all features, I will continue to solicit feedback and iterate to improve, but if you want your voice heard for the initial release, please share your feedback either here with the community or directly with me (from the app under Settings > Email Derek). Thank you! 🙇🏻♂️
FYI, if you are on the fence about subscribing, I would recommend subscribing SOON to support Beat Note at the introductory rate. I am planning a price increase (only for new subscribers, as all existing subscribers will stay locked into their initial rate) with the 3.0 release. Thanks for supporting Beat Note! 🎉
Attached are two sample PDF exports to show the development progress thus far: one in portrait and one in landscape. These are images of actual PDFs created using Beat Note! I've printed them as well, and the quality looks top-notch!

Derek Lee: I have an easy suggestion I think. Adding a “composer” input area on the right or left side below the title would be great. Very important to show accreditation to the composer.
Derek Lee
Jesse Rolland: This is great feedback, thanks Jesse! I've made a note to ensure including the composer's name. 👍🏻

Hi Derek,
I appreciate you for responding to my question about printing; thank you. I am a kit drum teacher at Geraldton, Western Australia. Grateful for the work you have put into your site.
I have an alternative to printing... If I press 'shift, command, and the number 5 keys on my Mac computer I can capture what I would have needed by printing.
Once again thank you.
Kind regards,
Morgan
Derek Lee
morgan: Thanks for your feedback and support! My apologies for not responding sooner.
Yes, screenshots and screen captures can be an appropriate workaround for printing. There are some BN users on YouTube and IG who are doing this in their videos actually!
That said, there still seems to be a lot of users to whom printing a PDF is an important feature for. I've been researching this topic more deeply lately and would be interested in your feedback on the questions I pose below. Thanks for your help and support!
Derek Lee
Hello friends! I'm interested in moving forward on this enhancement, but it isn't easy to do without your further input.
I invite those who have voted on this to provide additional feedback to help me proceed with this enhancement.
Please answer the following questions for me in as much detail as possible or set up a time to meet 1:1 from within the app!
#1. What would you use exported image of multiple measures for? Why is it important to you? How would you use it?
#2. Please take a look at the attached image of possible layouts for a 16-bar phrase. Which layout (or layouts) would you want the exported measures to have? Please choose as many as you like and indicate which letter layout you want.
#3. Please explain any additional information you want displayed in the exported data. For example the beat title, total # of measures, some header text or footer text, custom text that you enter, measure numbers, a legend key (which note head and line/staff is used for which instrument), etc.
#4. Please explain any aspects that you want to be configurable when you export it. Maybe you want to configure how many measures per row, maybe you want to choose the layout, maybe you want to choose portrait vs landscape, maybe you want a legend displayed or not, etc.
Thanks for your help! 🙇🏻♂️

Derek Lee:
Hi Derek,
#1: I would use the function to create sheet music for myself. I play drums for an artist and as I am not very good in writing my own sheets, I would "tap in" the beats that i play in a song and then create typical sheets as pdf-files.
#2: I would go with B - 8 bars per line. Thats also more or less the number of bars that fit in a line, when I write sheets by hand.
#3: Header Text: Song Title, Artist, Tempo, Time Signature, Song Number in a set (for example song 7 of 24)
#4: If i could configure the number of measures per line, that would be nice.
Many Thanks!
Derek Lee
Thanks to everyone who has voted for this feature! As exporting to PDF is a very complicated feature, but from a technical perspective as well as from ensuring I satisfy your needs, it would be really helpful if everyone who voted on this could please:
a) explain what you would use an exported PDF for (why it is important for you?)
b) explain what kind of layout (or layouts) you want the PDF to have
c) explain any specific additional information you want displayed on the PDF
d) explain any aspects that you want to be configurable when you export it
You can do this either a) in a comment here (this way we can all participate in the discussion) or b) by setting up a 1:1 meeting with me (ideally this would allow us to get into a much greater level of detail by having a real-time conversation).
Thanks for supporting Beat Note! 🙇🏻♂️

Derek Lee: Hello Darek,
First of all, thank you for the great app. Unfortunately, I never learned to write proper drum notes. Nonetheless, I can read drum sheet music. So I would like to use your app to tap in the stuff I play for my band and make sheets out of it. So it would be cool if it was possible to have more than two bars in one line. It would also be advantageous if you could name the individual parts (chorus, verse, etc.).
Thanks in advance!
Christoph
Derek Lee
Christoph Schell: Thanks so much for your response and feedback! I understand that you want to make sheets from the music in Beat Note. Could you explain to me how you would use these sheets? Are you using an iPhone or an iPad? Do you want to print the sheets? Is it a song structure or chart that you want to create? The more details you can provide, the better! Or if you have time to meet I'd love to discuss with you in person. Thank you! 🙇🏻♂️
Christoph Schell
Derek Lee:Hi Derek,
Many thanks for the quick response!
I mainly use an iPad, but I would also like to be able to print the sheet music in A4 format. In my case it's mainly about the song structure. So what do I play in the intro, how many bars of it, what do I play in the verse, how many bars of it, which fill do I play in the last bar of the verse, what do I then play in the chorus , how many bars of it etc.
So it would be practical to give the sheet (song) a title, for which artist/band the sheet is used, tempo and then the actual song structure.
Since my English isn't that great, a zoom call probably won't be that helpful. I am using google translate for this answer.
Thank you very much!! :)
Derek Lee
Christoph Schell: Thanks so much for your kind response! And for taking the time to use Google Translate so we can communicate. I really appreciate it! 🙇🏻♂️
Thanks for letting me know more about your use case. I can better understand now how you would like to use the app, and for what kind of use.
I have spoken with several users about the idea of transcription and charting sheet music for songs. In my research thus far, it seems each person has a very particular way they would like to chart or transcribe songs. This doesn't give me much confidence that I could easily craft a solution that would be intuitive to use and work for most people. This is the reason why I haven't built this yet, as I think it requires more research. I will continue to explore this and see how things progress. 👍🏻
Francesco Di Lillo
Derek Lee: Thank you for this app! For me, sometimes I like to just print out the sheet and read from it as I practice.
Derek Lee
Francesco Di Lillo: Thanks for your contribution, Francesco! Can you tell me some more about your practice routine? How will you practice something that you've printed out? Maybe you can share an example? What is it you like about practicing with the sheet music? Thank you!
Francesco Di Lillo
Derek Lee: I’m very new to drumming but happy to share my routine and how Beat Note would come into play. Once I find a song I want to play, I look online for sheet music. Even when I find it, often I need/want to adapt it to my style and skills. And if I’m using my device to play music off another app, for example, I can’t use Beat Note to look at the measures at the same time. Finally, if I want to share a sheet music, it would be easier in PDF. I hope it makes sense.
Derek Lee
Francesco Di Lillo: Thanks so much for sharing more about your experience! This is very helpful! 👍🏻 I'd love the opportunity to dive deeper into your routine to learn how Beat Note can be improved to help, and also learn more about how you'd like to see the PDF export. It would be great if we could chat in real-time. If you are open to it, please schedule a meeting with me from the app under Settings > Meet with Derek.

Derek Lee: Hi Derek, Thank you for giving me the opportunity to comment. As a drum teacher I am grateful to be able to use your app. Noting that there is a magnitude of books and other written material that is useful. However, I refuse to copy other peoples work. So having the use of your App I am able create my own drum notation and without stealing others peoples printed material. In the new year I am embarking on a new journey and offering to teach voluntary in Geraldton schools and at the Police & Community Youth Clubs (PCYC). I am sorry that I haven't contributed to this discussion; 'meaningfully on the topics'.
It will be a small contribution, but on my stationary I will pay my respects to you and make the following aware of your service - the students (that I teach), teachers, and to all the the the good people the support the children who frequent PCYC with the of your good works.
May I take this opportunity, to wish you a Happy Festive Season.
Take care,
Morgan
Derek Lee
morgan: Thank you so much for the kind message and supportive feedback, Morgan! I really appreciate it and I appreciate you and your teaching!
I am building Beat Note to be the most impactful educational tool for drumming teachers, students, and content creators. While I am happy to start with my own experience, I know for sure you have your own unique and valuable experiences as well. Please continue to share your feedback and help me iterate on Beat Note to ensure it is not only meeting but exceeding your needs.
Please continue to share with me what else I can do to help your teaching have even more impact! All the best, Derek

Irina Khismatullina
Derek Lee: Hi, thanks for looking into that!
In the simplest version that i’d personally find very useful:
a) I’d use the functionality to create, share and use sheet music for full songs
b) Just printing all bars, 4 on a line, would be already great
c) Just the notes/pauses one can see when opening a beat would be enough
d) No specific printing options could be fine, or only something simple that you already suggested (if it is simple to implement) like “how many bars on one line?”. The first really important extension could probably be compressing identical bars/beats using repeat signs or smth similar.
Anyway, even really rigid export of full long beat would be great, but if you want to implement having the possible extensions in mind, happy to think about this more and suggest more stuff.
Derek Lee
Irina Khismatullina: Thanks so much for sharing your feedback on this feature request! I'm excited to see so many people interested in exporting PDFs. This feature is currently in progress and coming along quite nicely. I will share some updates above so everyone can see them.
For your feedback:
d) In the first have included the ability for the user to choose how many measures per row of music to display.
For portrait orientation: from 1 measure to 4 measures wide
For landscape orientation: from 2 measures to 5 measures wide
There are additional options - I'll post a screenshot above. 👍🏻
I LOVE the idea of compressing identical bars/beats using repeat signs! I think this is something that not just PDF export should be able to do, but also the beats inside the app. I wonder what the easiest way to be able to configure and edit beats with this kind of functionality would be. 🤔
I've created a new feature request specifically for this enhancement. Please vote for this and add any other comments you have: https://roadmap.beat-note.app/feature-requests/p/id-like-the-ability-to-configure-how-many-times-a-measure-repeats-within-a-beat
> happy to think about this more and suggest more stuff.
The most important aspect of Beat Note that I want to communicate to you is that Beat Note is a constant work in progress, and I am always open to your feedback on how to improve it in any way possible. I have the first revision of the export to PDF feature almost ready for release based on feedback I've received thus far, so once it's available and you've had some time to play with it, please share your feedback on how it can be further improved. I will continue gathering feedback from you and others, iterating and improving the feature with each new release. 👍🏻 Thanks again for your kind support!
